When you hear "Kodiak," your mind likely jumps to high-protein products that are easy to grab off the shelves and feel good about your “healthy choice.”
I hate to break it to you, but SO many of their products suck from a health perspective, if you’re trying to lose weight.
Besides a couple of their main pancake mixes, some of their items have so much sugar and extra calories you may as well have an Eggo waffle, sprinkled with chocolate syrup and Skittles.
So, how can you tell if a packaged product is a good source of protein?
Well, I’m going to teach you a trick - trust me, this blog is worth reading.
The 10x Trick: Is It Really a Good Source of Protein?
Nutrition labels ARE confusing, but there is a simple trick to tell if a packaged item is actually a good source of protein or just a suck-bomb in disguise:
Take the grams of protein on the label and multiply it by 10.
Check the total calories. IF it’s a GOOD source of protein, the label MUST say that target number (Protein × 10) calories or LESS.
Example: Kodiak Maple & Brown Sugar Oatmeal
Protein: 10g–12g per serving
The 10x Target: 12g protein X 10 - 120 calories
The Reality: A single packet runs around 210 calories with up to 12g of added sugar.
Because 210 calories is well over the 120-calorie target, it is SO THE OPPOSITE of a good protein source! As a general rule, your packaged protein should NEVER (or rarely—I hate speaking in definitive! 😉) have much added sugar. One gram, maybe two grams max.
Top 5 Kodiak Products with the Lowest Protein & Highest Sugar
Whether you are tracking macros closely or just keeping an eye on added sugars, here is a breakdown of Kodiak’s snacks with the lowest protein and highest added sugar counts per serving.
1. Kodiak Bear Bites (Graham Crackers)
Designed an alternative to Teddy Grahams, Bear Bites may taste good, but have little protein and added sugar.
Protein: 5g
Added Sugars: 6g–7g
Serving Size: 30g (~11–12 pieces or 1 single pouch)
The Verdict: Because they are designed as bite-sized snacks, these crackers have one of the lowest protein-to-sugar ratios in the brand's lineup.
2. Chewy Granola Bars
Unlike Kodiak’s dense trail bars, the Chewy Granola Bar line leans into soft-baked texture and sweetness using tapioca syrup and chocolate chips.
Protein: 7g
Added Sugars: 7g–8g
Serving Size: 1 bar (35g)
The Verdict: While 7g of protein is respectable for a chewy lunchbox snack, the sugar content matches the protein almost 1:1.
3. Crunchy Granola Bars
Packaged in dual-bar pouches, these crunchy snacks may offer a quick energy boost, but that energy comes with a notable sugar hit.
Protein: 10g
Added Sugars: 10g–12g
Serving Size: 2 bars (1 pouch / 42g)
The Verdict: While 10g of protein sounds substantial, you are consuming 10g–12g of added sugar in a single pouch, making the sugar count outpace the protein. You may as well have a couple of Oreo cookies dipped in cottage cheese.
4. Protein Cookie Mix (Chocolate Chip & Oatmeal Raisin)
There’s a reason it’s hard to turn a cookie into a health food, and Kodiak’s cookie mix dessert line is no exception.
Protein: 5g–6g (as prepared per cookie)
Added Sugars: 10g–12g
Serving Size: 1 prepared cookie
The Verdict: Designed clearly as a dessert, these cookies carry double the amount of added sugar relative to their protein content per serving. Again, back to the Oreos.
5. Protein-Packed Muffin & Quick Bread Mixes
If you are looking at absolute numbers, Kodiak's sweet muffin mixes (like Cinnamon Roll or Chocolate Chip) take the crown for added sugar.
Protein: 10g (dry mix)
Added Sugars: ~20g
Serving Size: ½ cup mix (~55g)
The Verdict: While offering a decent 10g hit of protein dry, these mixes carry the highest absolute amount of added sugar per serving in Kodiak’s product lines.
The Takeaway
While Kodiak products are still decent (at BEST) options compared to Pop Tarts or donuts, please stop using them as a source of protein. These aren’t an ideal staple for your grocery list if you’re trying to lose weight.
If your primary goal is maximizing protein while keeping added sugar low, and you MUST BUY KODIAK, stick to their core Power Cakes Flapjack Mix.
