Why cutting booze will make your jeans fit better.
Let’s talk about happy hour, mama.
I am never going to be the coach who tells you that you can have to stop drinking. Life is short, parenting is relentless, and sometimes you just need a little liquid relaxaction.
But if you are consistently hitting your workouts, tracking your protein, and still wondering why your belly fat won’t budge, we need to look at what actually happens to your body when you pop that cork of wine.
I’m going to compare what happens to your lovely teenager(s) at home.
Meet Your Liver (You) and Alcohol (The Teenager)
Think of your metabolism—specifically your liver—as You, the Mom. You have a massive, never-ending to-do list to keep the household running. Your main daily chores include:
Prepping meals (processing nutrients)
Cleaning the house (filtering toxins)
Doing the mountains of laundry (burning stored body fat for energy)
Now, enter alcohol—the ultimate dramatic, high-maintenance teenager (or tween, toddler…you know, we love them dearly, but sometimes…:).
Your kid walks into the house, drops their backpack and baseball gear on the kitchen floor, and demands absolute, immediate attention, because he’s “so HUNGRY!”.
What do you do? You can’t just ignore the crisis. Because alcohol is technically a toxin, your body views it as an emergency.
Your liver immediately drops the laundry basket (burning fat), completely abandons the vacuuming (metabolizing your dinner), and shifts 100% of its focus to cleaning up after the teenager.
The Hard Truth: While your body is busy processing that margarita, your ability to burn fat drops by up to 73%. The fat-burning assembly line completely shuts down until that teenager is dealt with and out of the room.
The Domino Effect in the Household
While you're stuck making a snack and hearing all the tea from practic, a few other things go haywire in the house:
The Food Waiting Room: Any food you ate with or after the alcohol (like sneaking your kid's leftover chicken nuggets or chips) gets pushed to the back burner. Since your body can't store alcohol, it burns it first. This means the actual food calories are much more likely to be sent straight to fat storage because you're too busy to process them.
The Brain Hijack: Alcohol temporarily turns off the "rational mom" brain and hands the keys to the "impulse teenager." Suddenly, your 8:00 AM fitness goals don't stand a chance against the leftover birthday cake in the fridge at 10:30 PM.
The Sleep Sabotage: You think that wine helps you sleep, but it actually ruins your REM cycles. Bad sleep equals high cortisol (stress) the next day, which sends your body into survival mode, making you crave quick carbs and hold onto fat.
House Rules for Happy Hour
Am I saying get rid of your kids? Absolutely not.
We just need to manage the chaos so you can actually get back to the laundry:)
If you want to enjoy a drink and still lose weight, starting doing these things:
Pick Clean Drinks: Ditch the sugar-bomb mixers (like pre-made marg mixes or sugary coolers) that turn a 100-calorie drink into a 400-calorie liquid dessert. Stick to clear spirits with club soda and lime, or a dry wine.
Front-Load Your Protein: Eat a high-protein, lower-fat meal before you open the bottle. Protein keeps you full so you don't raid the pantry later, and it’s much harder for the body to store as fat while your metabolism is temporarily paused.
Budget the Energy: Treat alcohol calories like your Target budget. If you know you're having two glasses of wine tonight (about 250 calories), just pull back a little bit on your carbs or fats during the day to keep your overall energy balanced.
Keep the teenager's visits structured, keep the household organized, and you can absolutely lose the weight without losing your mind:)
