Belly Fat vs. My Espresso Machine: The Science of Why I’m Waiting
Okay, let's talk morning routines - I ❤️ ‘em!
I’m all about making time for what matters, and for me, that means waking up early and getting up before the rest of the world. It’s the only way I can get my head on straight and get things done (and have my first cup of coffee, with my beloved heavy cream).
As part of my morning routine, I’ve forced myself to do something that took a LONG time to master: delaying my first coffee, and drinking a full Stanley of water FIRST.
I know, I know. It sounds horrible. And at first, it's TOUGH. But be patient with yourself! It’s actually SO good for you.
(Sidenote: I am OBSESSED with Ecco soft-touch mugs - you need to get one!)
For all my fellow science nerds out there, I did some digging (shoutout to Gemini for the assist!) to find out ALL the reasons this is so good for you. Most I already knew, but one thing I learned?…
…it can help prevent belly fat! 🤯
Here’s 3 reasons why you should wait for coffee in the morning:
✨ Metabolic Reactivation and Rehydration
After 7–9 hours of sleep, your body is naturally dehydrated. Drinking water first thing triggers something called water-induced thermogenesis (which is just a fancy way of saying CALORIE BURN 🔥).
Clinical studies have shown that drinking about 16 oz. of water can temporarily boost your metabolic rate by up to 30%.
HELLO—burning more calories just by drinking water first?! MMMK!
By drinking water before the caffeine hits, you’re making sure your body is actually ready to burn fat at full capacity.
✨ Improved Insulin Sensitivity and Cortisol Balance
When you first wake up, your cortisol (the stress hormone) is already peaking to help you get moving. Caffeine stimulates even more cortisol.
If you drink coffee immediately, you risk over-stimulating those adrenal glands.
Thia leads to INCREASED BLOOD SUGAR and—get this—eventual FAT STORAGE around the midsection. 🤯 Delaying the caffeine lets your natural levels peak and fall normally, which keeps your insulin sensitivity on point all day.
Does it really count as half of a donut if you eat both of ‘em?!
✨ Natural Appetite Regulation
We’ve all been there: coffee on an empty stomach suppresses your appetite for a second, but then you "crash" and get those INTENSE sugar cravings. (Looking at you, break room donut! 🍩)
Starting with water helps stretch the stomach lining and tells your brain you’re actually full.
This stops those mid-morning hunger spikes that lead to overeating when that caffeine dip finally hits.
Honestly, making this one shift has changed my entire energy level. It wasn't easy to wait, but it's so worth it!
